F. Cody" and "Buffalo Bill" and dated "Feb. 27th /74" On 4¼ x 3" trimmed, ruled paper executed in black fountain pen ink. This came from the collection of Hiram Buck, a Civil War veteran. Cody, William F. "Buffalo Bill," Rare Inscribed and Double Signed Autograph Leaf, 1903 (1846-1917) One of the most recognizable figures of the American West, William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody was a scout, buffalo hunter, but above all a legendary showman. His Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World. thrilled audiences with his action re-enactments, wagon races, Native Americans and sharp shooters, including Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. He was instrumental in the founding of Cody, Wisconsin and opened a hotel there with his daughter, benefiting from the railway passing through. His later life saw his fortunes diminishing, but he nevertheless remained one of the most recognizable names of the 20th century, celebrated in books, song, theater and, of course, film and later television. Offered is a very fine autograph lifted from a book page signed in black fountain pen ink "True to friend & foe W. F. Cody 'Buffalo Bill' 1903"; particularly fine in that it is signed as both Cody and Buffalo Bill. Signature is excellent. The page sheet measures 2 x 6" and was clearly mounted into some kind of album, as evidenced by the paper lift and crude adhesive on verso that in no way impacts the obverse side which, save for light toning, is quite clean. Comes with COA from AACS autographs. Estimate Value $750 - UP

Gold Rush Card Signed by James W. Marshall, Discoverer of Gold in California. Signature ("Ja's, W, Marshall") on a 2¾ x 5 ¼" card stating that this is the autograph of the discoverer of gold in California, Jan. 19, 1848. Card has a small vignette of Old Sutter Mill, in Coloma, California, where Marshall discovered gold. The card is housed in an elaborate tripartite case, holding the card, a tiny nugget of gold, four tiny gold coins, an image of Marshall, and some brochures. Fine condition.
When news of the discovery of gold spread, some 300,000 men, women, and children from the United States and abroad flocked to California, hoping to make their fortune. At the time, California was not a state but was part of Alta California in Mexico. With the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (Feb. 2, 1848), ending the Mexican-American War, Alta California was ceded to the United States. California was admitted to the United States as a free state in 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that some 12 million ounces of gold were removed just during the first five years of the Gold Rush--only the beginning of the billions of dollars in today's values which would be removed by the mid 1880s, leading to the building of the San Francisco Mint in 1854, changing San Francisco to a boom town, and stimulating economies around the world. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
